Discussion:
Pop – The beginning is exciting and truly thrilling as we learn about Quinn, who is trying to wash blood off her hands while a cop is ringing the doorbell. She has to deal with him, and then she’ll be on the run.
Pop – She makes it out the door, leaving her dead husband on the kitchen floor, but hits a snowstorm on her way out of town. She doesn’t make it far after a couple pit stops before getting pulled over by a cop. She’s forced to stop at a very run-down motel with a dark history of an unsolved murder. The sign is falling apart, the restaurant is boarded up, and there’s a house behind it with a woman staring at her from the upstairs window.
Fizzle – This is where it fell flat for me. The big reveal? An angry, psychopathic mistress — who’s also the sister — and the “unsolved murder” at the motel turns out to be just a somewhat creepy permanent resident. While I didn’t predict the ending, I found it a letdown. Personally, I think the twist would have been more satisfying if the motel owner had been tied to the unsolved case, with creepier buildup around the sister’s character.
While this would have made the ending more predictable, it would have given me the closure I needed to rate the book higher.
Final Thoughts:
Still, Freida McFadden knows how to set up a suspenseful scene and keep you turning pages. If you love her style, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here — just don’t expect every thread to tie up in a shocking bow.
